Career advice? I’m 37 unemployed and going to college for the first time in my life. What path to take?

2 A’s and 2 B’s in my first semester. I was a contractor for 15 years, now I feel like I have to decide what to be when I grow up again. No one is hiring cops or firemen, what’s a middle aged kid to do?

Try to find a degree study that plays to your strength (in construction contracting?). Take a look at the list below.

  1. Go into the technology field, maybe even communications field. I would also Google to see what majors have the most careers that you could get in to. Hope this Helps! Good Luck :)

  2. Over at 20SB.net (20 Something Bloggers) a question has been proposed. What’s essential to your life? What can’t you live without, even when money is tight? What’s most important to you?

Being the tech whore that I am, I’m sure you are thinking I’m going to say I can’t live without the Internet or some coveted gadget like my laptop, iPod, TIVO, or cell phone. While all those things are pretty important to me and I would definitely miss them if they were stripped away, I can honestly say that I could survive without them…I think. It would be difficult and I would surely tremble and weep, but I think I could detox eventually. So what can’t I physically live without? Well scratch off the obvious which is air, water, food and sex. Now this is what’s left…

  3. I have been trying to decide what career course to take myself, and when I was doing job searches something that kept coming up in Wanted ads was Human Resources. They get paid very well and there is a big need for them right now.

  4. What type of contractor were you? Have you considered construction management or civil engineering?
