I wanted some career advice on the field of biotechnology?

I am a 17 year old guy.I want to enter into the field of biotechnology as i am very intrested in it.But i have learnt of late that it is a very low paying job.Is it true???i have joined engineering for now.Is it possible for me to get into biotech through engg??What are my options as of now because i just dont like the enggineering studies that i am doing .Any help would be greatly appreciated as i am very confused in this matter.
